Hey, there! I’m McMickey. I’m a mother, wife, and good food connoisseur. My hobbies include making food, eating food, and talking about food. As a type one diabetic, my life has revolved around food since I was diagnosed at seven years old. I learned how to read nutrition labels and count carbs before I learned how to read books, so my intimate (and sometimes complicated) relationship with food goes waaay back.
Navigating life as a diabetic has been complicated and challenging, but one thing it gave me is a fierce appreciation for the food we fuel our bodies with. Every day we’re faced with choices about the food we eat, and after more than twenty years of counting, planning, and experimenting, I have a couple (hundred) darn good recipes and tips that I’m ready to share.
Even though I’m diabetic, this isn’t necessarily a “healthy food only” space. This is a “real food that I actually eat and feed my family” kind of space. I believe in a balanced approach to food. Eat carbs! But do it modestly. Eat calories! Just don’t go overboard. But most importantly, eat what’s right for YOU, because food doesn’t just nourish your body – good food feeds the soul, too!
I include the nutrition facts for all of my recipes because I think it’s good to be aware of what we put into our bodies. Additionally, all of my recipes are made from simple, fresh ingredients you can find at your local grocery store or farmer’s market. I don’t use anything too fancy or fussy because who has time for that? These recipes are honest and straightforward, usually with a little something extra thrown in for fun. Like me!
